In-n-Out: The Drive to Increase Asian American Registered Bone Marrow Donors
Sponsor: Co-presented by Hyphen magazine and Chinese for Affirmative Action in support of Asian American Donor Program and Project Michelle.
Meet Michelle Maykin.
She is a 26-year old Asian American woman diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML). She needs to find a bone marrow donor match by June 21st to save her life.
Michelle's family and friends have banned together to launch a nationwide recruitment campaign, Project Michelle, to raise awareness of the dire donor shortage specifically within the Asian American community. The goal is to enroll 15,000 donors into the national registry in hopes of finding acute myeloid leukemia patient Michelle Maykin a bone marrow match and improve the odds for patients like her.
On any given day, 6,000 people are looking for a life-saving bone marrow donor. Only 3% of all Asian Americans are currently registered.
Please help us reach out to the 97% unregistered (roughly 14 million) Asian Americans to let them know how they can save Michelle or one of the other 6,000 patients currently looking for a match. Help save a life and get registered.

Liver Cancer Education Event
Stanford Asian Liver Center and the American Cancer Society is putting together an educational forum to educate the Oakland Chinese community on liver, lung and nasopharyngeal cancer.

Cantonese. There will be free Hep B screening being done at the same time. The talk will be given by Dr, Sam So from Stanford (liver) and Dr. Huang (on lung and nasopharyngeal cancer).

The Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Cancer Survivorship Conference: Dispelling Myths, Reducing Disparities & Providing Hope will address cancer concerns unique to Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AA & NHPI) cancer survivorship communities. This 2½-day, interactive conference - celebrating the Asian & Pacific Islander National Cancer Survivors Network's tenth anniversary - offers plenary and training sessions, and capacity-building workshops focusing on the cancer care continuum, from outreach and education through diagnosis, treatment and survivorship, from the perspective of AA & NHPI patients, families, caregivers and health professionals.
Plenary sessions will cover Patient Navigation, Alternative, Complementary & Integrative Treatments, and specific issues of cancer survivorship unique to AA & NHPI communities. Workshops include grant writing, media spokesperson, and policy & legislative advocacy. Breakout sessions will address ethnic-specific cancer support groups, the impact of cancer on AA & NHPI families and caregivers, childhood cancer issues, and finding language-appropriate and culturally-tailored cancer information. The interactive format of the sessions, in addition to exhibits and meal events, is designed to facilitate participants' learning and sharing, and enhance opportunities for information dissemination and networking. Highlighting the conference will be an array of ethnic foods and entertainment, representing various AA & NHPI cultures. Participants are encouraged to dress in traditional attire representative of their communities and cultures.

Filipino Community Cancer Collaborative (FCCC) is working on a project about breast cancer education in the Filipino community.FCCC is interested in talking to Filipina women who:
* are 50 years old or older, never had cancer,
Philippine-born, and began living in U.S. at the age of 18 years or older.
FCCC would like your input on messages in the media that will raise awareness about breast cancer information. Group discussions will be conducted in English/Tagalog on Saturdays during January - February 2008, at the West Bay Pilipino Multi-Service Center in San Francisco. You will be offered a gift for your participation in the group discussion.
