The APIAHF is a national advocacy organization dedicated to promoting policy, program, and research efforts to improve the health and well-being of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA & NHPI) communities. The Chronic Diseases Program will be having a Community Advocacy & Training on Cancer & Health (CATCH) Leadership Training on May 1-3, 2009 at Yu Ai Kai in San Jose, CA. This 2½ day free training offers Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AA & NHPI) community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, community members, and health advocates the opportunity to learn how to provide individuals, groups and communities with the necessary training, tools and skills to be competent, confident, and effective spokespersons, advocates and leaders with regard to AA & NHPI communities and enhance personal and community capacities for advocacy and leadership on cancer control issues across the cancer care continuum.
There are 5 modules:
Training Module I: Intro AA & NHPI Communities & Cancer 101 in Communities:
Participants will learn about:
· Census, Demographics, History in the U.S., Sociocultural/Socioeconomic Factors
· Health-Related Norms, Customs, Beliefs, Practices, Cultural Nuances
· Cancer Data (aggregate and ethnic-specific, where available): Incidence (combined, by age, sex, selected sites); Mortality (combined, by age, sex, selected sites); Survival (combined, by age, sex, selected sites);
Combined, these components serves as the foundation to understanding cancer in various AA & NHPI communities on the U.S. mainland, in Hawai‘i, and across the Pacific.
Training Module II: Data Advocacy Training: Participants will learn how to find data from government and non-government sources; how to maneuver through existing data sets and how to use external and internal data for their cancer programs and for advocacy (e.g. fact sheets, policy briefs, and recommendations).
Training Module III: Communications on Cancer and AA & NHPI Communities: Participants will learn how to be an effective public speaker; creating presentations, learning simulations of practicing how to give interviews to media, creating your media talking points, and how to become involved in the APINCSN Speakers’ Bureau. On-camera exercises will help participants strengthen their speaking style and effectiveness. Participants will learn how to get your message out through the media, sharing forms and examples of media advocacy (e.g. Op-Eds, letters to the editor, articles, and press releases), how to prepare for press conferences/briefings, and practicing a “mock” press conference, using media advocacy as an effective tool to reach AA & NHPI communities, as well as to educate the media, policy makers, and the public about cancer’s impact on AA & NHPI communities; working and building relationships with the media so they will cover your story.
Training Module IV: Policy & Legislative Advocacy Training: Participants will learn about general advocacy, lobbying vs. information/education visits, civics 101, getting through to your legislator, mock legislative visits, and how to prepare participants for appointments to local, state and federal/national governmental and non-governmental advisory councils.
Training Module V: Training to Establish Ethnic-Specific and Language-Specific AA & NHPI Cancer Support Groups: Participants will be provided with an introduction to psychosocial issues and cancer; standard support models; types of support methods (moderated, facilitated, or peer); logistics for support groups; how to also establish combined (ethnic) support groups in English; and ways to retain participation and sustain support groups.
